The temple's gold plating wasn't part of its original construction. It was added in the early 19th century under the patronage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, founder of the Sikh Empire, who commissioned the gilding as an act of devotion, reportedly using several hundred kilograms of gold leaf to cover the upper floors in the finish that gives the temple its English name today.

A Floor Kept Clean by Volunteers

Kar sewa, a tradition of voluntary communal service, sees devotees regularly cleaning the temple's marble floors and grounds without any expectation of payment or recognition, a practice considered a form of spiritual devotion in its own right and one of the more visible, ongoing expressions of Sikh community values at the site.
